Alexa Chung has an affinity for personality-driven design. Perhaps that's why, at Saturday night's intimate dinner for Christian Siriano, the style expert paired a citrus yellow mohair turtleneck with a jacquard mini and kitten-heel Mary Janes. The look was a bit retro, a bit girly, and 100% Sirianoa designer who, in the six years since winning season four of Project Runway, has created a multimillion, high-low fashion empire to rival Jessica Simpson.

"His personality comes out in the clothes he makes," Chung said of Siriano's fall collection that included cocoon coats, refined cocktail dresses, and a handful of refined, black tie gowns. "I feel like he has a real affinity for old school glamour. You can tell he's quite passionate about that aesthetic. His collection is quite aspirational in that sense," Chung continued. "I think people can be snobby about the way people got to where they are. No designer was a designer before they were designer. Coco Chanel came from an orphanage, for example. This day and age, people should just be like, 'Well done. People love your clothes.'"

In between gabbing with pals Harley Viera-Newton and Leigh Lezark, Chung also touched on the differences between American and British fashion: "In America, when I read Us Weekly or People, the best dressed list is often the most boring list. And then in the back, on the Fashion Police page, I'm like, 'They look great!'" she said with a laugh. "People like Chloë Sevigny are really big in the U.K. because people really appreciate that eccentric juxtaposition of items," she explained. "I find it hard to connect with people who have a stylist," she said. "They can look cool, but you can tell that they're not expressing themselves. When I see someone wearing a paper doll outfit, I think, 'You look great, but I don't know if you, personally, would choose it.'"Tags: christian siriano nyfw alexa chung
